State Farm Insurance has recently been awarded for bigheartedly supporting its employees that are enlisted in the Reserves and National Guard. The Department of Defense is honoring State Farm Insurance with the Freedom Award, which is the highest employer honor that they impart. State Farm feels privileged to have been given this award, and to have had so many men and women from the Armed Services in their employment.
Although State Farm Insurance CEO and Chairman Ed Rust Jr. is proud to be receiving such an honor, he says the real honor belongs with the members of his team who serve in the National Guard and Reserves. Many State Farm Insurance employees are even on active duty right now, which is an even greater source of pride.
State Farm Insurance was awarded the Freedom Award for efforts such as paying employees the difference between their State Farm salary and base military pay that they receive while on active duty. The company also started a reintegration program to help employees transition from military life to civilian life. State Farm Insurance has been involved in various community troop support activities as well, such as the Adopt-A-Soldier program and the company’s Military Affinity Group.
State Farm Insurance is not the first employer to have received the Freedom Award, as the Secretary of Defense initiated the honor in 1996, through its National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. It is important for companies such as State Farm Insurance to be recognized for providing the most outstanding support for their National Guard and Reserve employees, to encourage others to do the same. In a time when Guardsmen and Reservists are being mobilized more than ever, this is especially important.
The award will be presented at ceremonies in Washington, DC on September 18, where other companies will also be honored for their efforts to support the National Guard and Reserves.

State Farm Insurance is celebrating National Citizenship Day by teaming up with All Star baseball player and renowned slugger David Ortiz. National Citizenship Day, which is observed on September 17, honors the ideals of immigrants who come to the United States to become legal citizens and contribute to the betterment of this country. Along with State Farm Insurance, Ortiz is extending his hand in encouragement and assistance to Latinos who are legally documented and who aspire to become Citizens of the United States of America. State Farm shares Ortiz’s pride in the United States, and supports his own decision to take the oath of citizenship just this last June.
State Farm Insurance is one of the lead sponsors Ya Es Hora (It’s Time) campaign of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials. This is a movement to engage and education the Latinos nation throughout the nation to get more involved in the democratic process. State Farm and NALEO seek to provide information about citizenship to qualified permanent residents and assist current citizens in registering to vote. State Farm Insurance has also made an effort to back NALEO in their efforts to encourage Latinos to become active voters and active participants in their local communities.
The team at State Farm Insurance believes that David Ortiz is exemplary of the role that new citizens play in this country. “In baseball you need courage, confidence and perseverance and the same is true with becoming a citizen,” said Aymee Ruiz, corporate public affairs at State Farm Insurance. “David is a great role model for Latinos and National Citizenship Day is a way for all of us to honor those who have become citizens through the naturalization process.”
Besides the Ya Es Hora campaign, State Farm has also been actively engaged in reaching out to the Latino Community through their State Farm Es Para Mi campaign. This is an effort to utilize bilingual employees to provide assistance with and information about citizenship, voter registration information, scholarship, and internship opportunities.

State Farm has some advice for home owners who are trying to prepare for the coming rain season, since people often simply blame their household leaks on the heavier rains during the fall and winter months, and even into the early spring. State Farm has prepared some data based on their past claims, finding that 80 percent of leaks in American households are the result of plumbing and major appliances, and not the increased rain. State Farm Insurance would like to inform home owners that their best bet for avoiding leaks is to make sure that their plumbing and appliances are sound.
The fact of the matter is that more than 150,000 State Farm policy holders filed claims last year as a result of plumbing and appliances that were leaking in their homes. Many of them thought that the leaks came from the rains through their roofs. Since State Farm Insurance is responsible for approximately 20 percent of the home insurance policies in the nation, they definitely have some experience dealing with leaky roofs. This is why State Farm is offering some advice to home owners - routine maintenance and early detection of trouble spots can help to avoid costly leaks and potentially save money in the long run.
The experts at State Farm warn home owners that it is crucial to address minor leaks as they arise, because most property insurance policies only cover water losses that are caused by sudden and accidental overflow. Leaks that occur over time and are repeated or continuous will not be covered in most cases. State Farm representatives warn their policy holders that water leaks can happen anywhere in the house, although the kitchen laundry room and bathroom are the most common locations. State Farm Insurance has probably seen the highest number of water leakage claims made for toilet leaks – these cost about $10,000 per household last year.
State Farm has many tips for home owners that would like to avoid such common water leaks, though. They can provide all the tips and tricks for a leak-free home in the coming rainy season and throughout the year.
